'A day in the life of a smart home'

A flavour of how iT feels to live a smarter life...

As you wake, the blinds slowly rise, letting in the natural morning sunlight. Your favourite radio station fades up. Getting out of bed, the floor is already warm underfoot. Heading into the ensuite bathroom, the lights come on automatically and the radio show you were just listening to is already playing. Whilst you shower, the room detects the rise in humidity, triggering the ventilation system to extract the wet air, retain the heat and recycle the air back in, warm, dry and fresh.

Heading downstairs to the kitchen, you smell fresh coffee as your machine is already preparing your morning espresso. The kitchen blinds raise, revealing the view of the garden for you to enjoy with your breakfast. You use your single remote to check the day’s news on the discreetly installed TV.

Before heading off for the day, you tap out to set the alarm knowing that as you do so, the heating will lower and the lights turn off to save energy in your absence. Even when the kids leave the TV and lights on in their rooms, the house switches everything off when you set the alarm.

Whilst you are out for the day, the sun heats the building through the efficient glazing with free energy, keeping the house warm without needing additional heating. When it starts to get too hot the building automatically lowers the blinds to reduce solar gain and keep the interior temperature stable. Whilst alarmed, the building uses sensors to keep an eye on your home and reports any activity immediately to your smartphone so you can monitor security remotely.

On your way home in the evening, the building starts to prepare for your arrival. When required, the heating brings your most used rooms back up to a comfortable temperature. You are having guests round to stay, so on the way home you use your smartphone to tell the building to heat the guest bedroom for later.

As you arrive, the automatic gates let you into the drive. The house and driveway are beautifully lit to welcome you home. You tap your keyless entry fob on the reader by the front door and it opens electronically. The alarm is deactivated and the stunningly designed hall and kitchen lighting fades up to light your way.

It’s time to prepare for the evening’s entertainment. It’s a nice evening so you decide to have a BBQ on the decking. To enhance the atmosphere, you turn on the garden lighting, illuminating the trees and shrubs with subtle colour. You select a favourite playlist to play from the hidden garden speakers. With the snacks and drinks out, you touch the switch and dim the kitchen lighting for a more relaxed feel.

The music fades down and a subtle chime sounds from the in-ceiling speakers. It’s your guests at the gate. From the iPad you view your guests. Your voice greets them from the door entry unit outside the gate. You touch a button on the iPad to let them in, the gate opens, the driveway lights illuminate to show them in and they park up.

After dinner, music and conversation, it’s time for a film. In the living room, you use the simple remote to dim the lights. The in-ceiling projection screen descends silently. As the projector comes to life, you navigate the simple, clear menus to choose a film - and in one click it starts to play, in stunning quality. The cinematic surround sound is incredible and your guests marvel at where the sound is coming from as the discreet speakers are totally hidden.

Time for bed. The lighting comes on automatically as you pass through the hall and stairway. The bedrooms are warm and cosy. The blinds in the bedrooms have lowered earlier for privacy. In bed, you use the bedside switch to turn out the lights and the smart heating sets back to a lower setting for the night. Before you wake the next day, the building prepares once again to provide you with a more comfortable and efficient lifestyle - automatically.
