This stunning bespoke new build was created as a second home and clifftop surf lodge for family and friends to enjoy the exceptional surfing beach below. The design made the most of the panoramic views of the Atlantic, taking full advantage of the building's elevated position.
Our brief was to integrate audio visual systems into the modern interiors but keep all the equipment completely hidden when not in use. As the interior layouts were focused towards the 180° glazed views over the seascape, the trickiest part of the brief was to position TVs where they would not interrupt the outlook.
Our Design: TV & Audio Systems
We started by working closely with the architect, build team and client to find innovative ways to provide a full entertainment experience in the evenings whilst preserving the focus on the sea view during the day. Our solution was to design bespoke walls to contain the TVs and audio systems. Each TV was mounted in a recess and covered by a large artwork on an automated lift mechanism - the artwork rising to reveal the TV when it was turned on. The TV then rotates automatically out into the room to create a comfortable viewing angle and reduce reflections from the panoramic bifold windows opposite. When the TV is switched off, it retracts back into the recess and the artwork lowers to conceal it completely.
The exceptional top floor audio system was designed for TV, movies and music. The bespoke sound bar mounted under the TV follows it as it rotates on its mortised arm, optimising the sound according to the position of the viewer. A powerful but discreet wall-mounted subwoofer provides impressive bass for movie soundtracks or music for parties.
To complement the TV audio system, the open-plan top floor living space has another discreet audio system consisting of two speakers, wall hung and disguised as artworks - their custom-printed fabric covers matching the interior style. These speakers offer truly high fidelity sound and the accompanying subwoofer means the system can achieve impressive levels without any loss of sound quality.
The master bedroom features a custom-built end-of-bed TV lift cabinet which raises the TV when it is switched on. The audio system is mounted in the sides of the TV cabinet and the discreet wall-mounted subwoofer means the sound is both powerful and refined. The stunning en-suite features tiny in-ceiling speakers in the bath, shower and toilet areas.
The guest floor follows a similar design to the top (private) floor, but with a smaller TV and simpler setup. The guest floor has its own Sky box and AppleTV for independent access to TV, movies and music. The guest master bedroom also has a TV lift cabinet.
“The TV and HiFi systems in the open-plan area can be used together to provide seamless coverage of the large space for gentle background music whilst dining - or for rib-shaking party music!”
“The master bedroom has a hidden TV in a custom-made end-of-bed cabinet. Incredible quality audio is also built in - all controlled by one simple remote”
“The guest floor has a hidden TV and audio system with its own Sky, AppleTV and BluRay - plus a USB connection so guests can show their own films”
As the property is situated on a surfing beach, it also features a spa with monsoon showers, sauna and external hot tub. As you approach the building you can gain access with keyless entry (you don't want to lose your keys whilst surfing!), entering directly into a board storage and wetsuit drying area. Once out of your surf gear and through the monsoon showers, it's time to relax in the sauna - where the powerful audio system is controlled by a waterproof remote (and there is fibre optic feature lighting). On the terrace, the hot tub is a great place to enjoy the evening sun. The hidden audio system under the decking around the tub keeps sound localised so as not to disturb any neighbours.
In the basement Games Room/Cinema, the large TV panel is perfect for everyone to enjoy big screen movies and HD sports together. The audio system provides an exceptional cinematic experience, with the large subwoofer producing powerful bass which is also fantastic for listening to music.
Systems and Controls
All the building's operational equipment is located in six large wall-mounted racks in the garage area. This design saves the living space above from being compromised, both in terms of space and aesthetics. From the racks, a future-ready network of infrastructure cabling runs to all rooms in the property, providing high speed fibre broadband, seamless wifi and telephone coverage.
All the systems - including TV, audio, lighting and automation - are controlled via a custom-made iPad interface. This allows the users to intuituvely control the technology that makes the building more comfortable and luxurious. Simple button remotes are also provided for an alternative to the iPads when changing channels or volume whilst watching TV.
Future Readiness and Support
The whole project was designed to be very flexible and adaptable. The cabling installed in the early stages of the project can support almost limitless upgrades as technology changes over the years. The systems are also designed for remote monitoring and maintenance. We receive notifications if any issues are detected, so we can often resolve a problem before the client is even aware of it.
All of these elements combine to allow us to create a very positive user experience for the client, family and guests as they enjoy their time surfing, taking in the views and relaxing by the sea.
Case Study: Smart Home
This highly bespoke smart home features a stunning range of design features and advanced technology. There is full zoned control of heating, lighting and AV systems throughout this modern family home.
The brief for this project was to create a comfortable, energy-efficient smart home with an emphasis on flexible automated lighting and heating.
Design was to be a key factor and the client was looking for creative ideas to enhance the building and living spaces.
Bespoke Lighting Design
The project began with an in-depth consultation process leading to the generation of detailed project drawings and specification documents. Such documents are vitally important to the success of a complex project; we carefully crafted the specification, taking into consideration the design, aesthetics, functionality, ergonomics and budget.
The project team - including electricians and heating engineers - then followed our drawings to achieve the end result.
Lighting was designed specifically to create the atmosphere and layering that makes a building both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Multiple sensors automate the lighting depending on the time of day, occupancy and ambient light levels for extra efficiency.
Smart Lighting & Heating Control
We chose to install white glass keypads with clean graphic displays. These striking keypads allow the client to manually control the lighting and heating in each room.
When the keypads are set up according to the client's preferences, the system automatically sets the heating to a comfortable level.
The lighting uses quality LED fittings to create different lighting scenes. This allows the client to easily adjust the lighting to suit the function of the room - or their mood.
This integrated approach means the lighting and heating are always optimised for each room - making the home more comfortable and saving energy at the same time.
Stunning Multi-Room Audio & TV
The project has a 6-zone video system with Sky TV distributed to each room in HD quality.
There are also AppleTVs for each room so you can stream HD movies from iTunes, watch TV box sets on Netflix or share photos from your iPhone directly to each TV.
All the TVs can be controlled from either the elegant remote control or a dedicated iPad app.
The system is designed for easy upgrades to keep pace with new technology.
All the main components in the AV systems are centrally located in an AV systems rack, which is located discreetly out of sight in a cupboard.
To save space, the multi-room audio system is neatly wall-mounted.
There is a dedicated cinema room with a premium 5.1 audio system and a 55'' HD TV mounted in a bespoke feature wall.
The brief was to ensure that there were no visible cables, with a very discreet installation including speakers hidden behind a fabric panel. The sound quality is also exceptional.
The design of the lighting, feature wall and room layout were carefully created in-house at Halo Haus by our own design team.
After developing detailed 3D drawings and dimensioned designs for the other contractors to follow, we coordinated with other contractors including carpenters, plasterers, electricians and decorators to create a stunning finished room.
Case Study: Loxone Smart Home
Loxone is a very powerful home automation system and we were able to deliver a supremely functional whole home system for an affordable budget for this family home.
Halo Haus are Loxone GOLD partners and provide the highest level of design competency, project management skill and engineering quality. This comes through in the superb fit and finish of this stylish but affordable smart home project.
This detached family home was designed from the early stages to include all the features of a very well specified Smart Home but on a budget that met the clients expectations.
We wanted to include a combination of beautiful lighting design, energy efficient heating controls and advanced security.
We worked closely with the client to strike the right balance within the property. Carefully combining a very contemporary style in the newly built extension and master bedroom suite, but also maintaining a traditional theme with the areas that retained the original 1930s architecture.
The end results are stunning. With great lighting powered by Loxone smart lighting controls, we can make sure the lighting is always perfectly suited to the mood, room function or time of day.
Smart Lighting Controls
Every room in this property has a combination of lighting circuits which are elegantly combined to ensure the right balance of lighting is possible for every scenario. From bright, clear task lighting for cooking and working to atmospheric low level lighting for relaxing, dining and watching TV. Automated lighting activated by motion sensors trigger low night lighting for moving through the hallway and stairway areas late at night.
Smart Heating Controls
Every room has its own temperature sensors embedded in the elegant light switches. No ugly thermostats are needed and the Loxone automation system constantly monitors the room temperature and ensures the rooms are always comfortable. This saves energy and improves the feeling of comfort and luxury at the same time.
The building is protected by motion sensors throughout which form the basis of an advanced alarm system including CCTV. When the alarm is set and the owners leave the property, the automation system not only activates the bugler alarm but it also makes sure all the lighting is off, doors and windows closed and the heating set back for efficiency.
WiFi, TV & Audio
This family smart home also features seamless WiFi throughout as well as multi room audio and TVs beautifully installed in custom joinery. A professionally designed cabling infrastructure ensures the family can continue to adapt as new technologies are made available in the future.
